Public Domain & Image Sources
Over the past several years, major museums, libraries, and cultural institutions around the world have made significant portions of their collections available under open-access policies. These initiatives provide access to artworks that are in the public domain and can generally be viewed, downloaded, shared, and reused, including for commercial purposes, subject to the terms established by the respective institution and applicable law.
APOGRAF.DOWNLOAD curates and brings together selected public-domain artworks from these collections, making them easier to discover and access in one place.
Our collection may include images sourced from institutions that have explicitly released their digital reproductions for unrestricted use, as well as images available through Wikimedia Commons and other public repositories. The copyright status and terms of use may vary depending on the source, the artwork, and the jurisdiction.
In particular, Wikimedia Commons notes that faithful photographic reproductions of two-dimensional public-domain works may themselves be considered public domain in certain jurisdictions. This position is supported by legal precedents including the U.S. case Bridgeman Art Library v. Corel Corp., although copyright law and its interpretation may differ between countries.
Within the European Union, Article 14 of Directive (EU) 2019/790 on copyright and related rights in the Digital Single Market provides protection for the public-domain status of reproductions of visual artworks: reproductions of works of visual art that are in the public domain cannot themselves be protected by copyright or related rights unless the reproduction constitutes an original intellectual creation.
The public-domain status of an artwork may also depend on the applicable copyright term and the laws of the country concerned. Users are responsible for verifying the legal status and permitted use of any image in their particular jurisdiction and intended context.
